At the School Room Table 10/30

 Today at the School Room table we: Reviewed the answers to all of the history questions from Chapters 17 and 18 in SotW. Went over the adjective clause homework sheet. Wrote a few adjective clause sentences to sum up the history chapters 17 and 18. Answered the questions from WtMMtM Describe the dragon that Minli untied.  He was brilliant red, emerald green whiskers, horns and a dull stone-colored ball like the moon on his forehead.  Today, at the school room table, we: 1. Filled in the SotW maps for chapters 15 and 16. McLean's responses:  While reading Chapter 15 of Story of the World , I saw that the boy who tried to warn the English about the Wampanoag army against them, was ignored and killed. This made me think about how he probably felt so conflicted about which side he was on, and because of this, he might have felt that he didn't truly belong in either of the settlements. While reading Chapter 16, I noticed that Newton began to realize the laws of motion of gravity. This made me wonder how his ideas weren't instantly rejected. Were his ideas convincing enough to get everyone on board with him or was there something else going on? 2. Went over the chapter questions for 15 and 16. 3.  At the school room table today, we: 1. Reviewed the chapter 13 and 14 homework questions from The Story of the World . 2. Reviewed complex sentences and compound sentences. After watching two short videos about Versaille, McLean wrote a complex sentence about what she learned. After watching a short video about how the lands and flags of Germany have changed over time, McLean wrote a compound sentence about those changes. 3. Introduction to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon : We talked about Chinese characters and learned how to write mountain and moon.   We also talked about symbolism and "homonyms" in Chinese culture, and McLean wrote them in her notebook to prepare for reading the book: 9--forever 4--death fish and pearls--good fortune red--happiness blue--immortality and gods/goddesses  McLean wrote complex and compound sentences about Chinese culture.

At the school table today, we:  1. Reviewed chapter 11 and 12 questions. We read the rest of chapter 12 and talked about the plague and fire of the 1660s.  2. Reviewed the two picture books given for reading. "Lon Po Po" to take a peak at Chinese culture and "Wabi Sabi" for a peak at Japanese culture. We wrote a response haiku to "Wabi Sabi:" the soft cat spirals quickly nipping at its tail the tail can't be caught 3.  Reviewed IO/Dos, PA/PNs, compound sentences, and complex sentences.
