At the School Room Table 10/23

Today, at the school room table, we:

1. Filled in the SotW maps for chapters 15 and 16.

McLean's responses:

While reading Chapter 15 of Story of the World, I saw that the boy who tried to warn the English about the Wampanoag army against them, was ignored and killed. This made me think about how he probably felt so conflicted about which side he was on, and because of this, he might have felt that he didn't truly belong in either of the settlements.

While reading Chapter 16, I noticed that Newton began to realize the laws of motion of gravity. This made me wonder how his ideas weren't instantly rejected. Were his ideas convincing enough to get everyone on board with him or was there something else going on?

2. Went over the chapter questions for 15 and 16.

3. Read this website about Newton's laws and took the website's quiz. McLean then wrote a response paragraph with an illustration to what she read.

4. Discussed appositives and chose objects for which to write sentences with appositives. McLean wrote five sentences with appositives about her friend and family members:

Hannah, a professional goofball, is one of my closest friends.

My brother, Loch, spends most of his free time in his room playing video games.

I can't live without my cat, my small, soft child.

5. We discussed Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and answered the questions she was given on Monday.

  1. What does the name Minli mean? Quick thinking (p.2)
  2. How much money was in Minli’s house? Two old copper coins. (p. 2)
  3. What kept Minli from becoming dull and brown like the rest of the village she lived in? The stories her father told her every night at dinner (p.3)
  4. Why does nothing grow on Fruitless Mountain? What must happen for it to produce again? It is the broken heart of Jade Dragon. Jade Dragon must be reunited with at least one of her children. (p. 8)
  5. What did Ma say the man who took the stones from the mountain had planned to do with them?  He planned to carve inking stones. (p.9)
  6. How does a goldfish bring fortune into your home? Goldfish means plenty of gold. Having a bowl of goldfish means your house will be full of gold and jade. (p. 13)
  7. What does the Book of Fortune contain? It holds all the knowledge of the world – past, present and future. (p. 20)
  8. What does the red thread do? It ties together everyone who meets. (p. 21)
  9. Why does the goldfish tell Minli how to find the Old Man of the Moon? Because she set him free. (p.29)
  10. Name three of the items Minli packs for her trip.
WtMMtM Project:
Short story book...
Consider working with a frame idea (girl walking through her garden, etc) and adding the short stories just as this book does.
