At the school table today, we:

1. Reviewed chapter 11 and 12 questions. We read the rest of chapter 12 and talked about the plague and fire of the 1660s.

2. Reviewed the two picture books given for reading. "Lon Po Po" to take a peak at Chinese culture and "Wabi Sabi" for a peak at Japanese culture. We wrote a response haiku to "Wabi Sabi:"

the soft cat spirals

quickly nipping at its tail

the tail can't be caught

3. Reviewed IO/Dos, PA/PNs, compound sentences, and complex sentences.

  1. Write a sentence with a Direct Object (use a transitive verb like give, take, follow, etc).
She wrote: The lightning strikes the plane, sending it into the sea.
  1. Write a sentence with a predicate nominative (use a linking verb like is/seems/feels and make sure the word after the linking verb is a noun renaming the subject.)
She wrote: The geologist is Emma.
  1. Write a sentence with a predicate adjective (use a linking verb like is/seems/feels and make sure the word after the linking verb is an adjective describing the subject.)
She wrote: The explorer is swift to look for treasure.
  1. Write a compound sentence (two independent clauses linked with a comma-FANBOYS)
She wrote: There is treasure all over the world, and there is treasure in the pyramids.
  1. Write a complex sentence (one independent clause and one dependent clause--the dependent clause should begin with a subordinate conjunction)
She wrote: If the earth didn't orbit the sun, we would never see the sun rise.

Bonus sentence:

Charles II was the king during the Black Death and Great London fire.

4. We read the next three chapters of Paddle to the Sea and wrote a response:

On page 23 of Paddle to the Sea, the water was very hard and so fast. Paddle did flips and dives. Soon Paddle got stuck in a whirlpool and banged against rough trees.

5. And, to remember the Great Fire of London in 1666, we burnt 4/5 of the houses.
