Today at the School Table

We answered the questions from Story of the World chapters 41 and 42.

When language barriers of the British and Maori people came up, we looked a bit at the study of linguistics and worked one of the easier linguistic puzzles from this page

Ending Questions about No Summit Out of Sight

26. Jordan’s dad faced a great deal of criticism for taking him on these adventures. He finally says to the media, “You want to talk about irresponsible parenting? Let’s talk about the million and some parents that are standing in a fast-food restaurant waiting to supersize their kid right now for dinner tonight.” What do you think of his statement? Is he right? Which is actually more dangerous long-term?

McLean says: Long term, burgers might be more dangerous, but short term, it kind of depends because inexperience could cause death! If you don't prepare well, these short-term dangers could very well be deadly. Obesity is reversible but death is irreversible.

27. List the challenges and most important moments of the Antarctica expedition to climb Mount Vinson. Star the three moments you think Jordan will remember most.

McLean says: Cold was the overarching biggest challenge.

28. Jordan has developed his own philosophy that he hopes will inspire other kids. Find a quote that best represents it. Then respond to it in a journal.

McLean says: Climb your own Everest.

29. What do you think is the most important thing that Jordan learned throughout his quest for the seven summits? Do you think the sacrifices he made were worth what he learned?

McLean says: He learned how to push himself. He learned to stay calm and not let terrible things bother you when you need to climb.

30. Create a list of goals that you would most like to accomplish in the next year on an index card like Jordan suggests. Then list the people who could most help you reach those goals.

McLean's list:

1. She wants to work better with artistic backgrounds, playing with the color-wheel, drawing hands and feet.

(She can be helped by you-tube and practice.)

2. She wants to learn a song or two on the guitar. (She can be helped by you-tube and/or apps.)

3. She wants to get better at tennis. (Coaches can help with this.)

4. She would like to study more about the fourth dimension and DID. (Internet research would help with this.)

5. Longterm, she would like to be a better person. She would like to see how she is wrong and improve that and be better at communication. She would like to be better with anxiety and understand the perspectives of others better. (She likes to look at different people, pick out their admirable qualities, and imitate those.)

Finishing up essay and typing it, if time.
