At the School Table on January 29
1. We reviewed chapters 29 and 30 of SoTW, answering all the questions.
2. We finished reading Open the Door to Liberty, Biography of Toussaint L'Ouverture and McLean wrote a response to the book.
Toussaint L'Ouverture being a kind-hearted and intelligent leader of Haiti fought for peace and prosperity. But Napoleon, a power-hungry dictator wanted Toussaint out of Haiti. Napoleon, combined with the hateful Haitian, Dessalines, eventually lost the battle but captured Toussaint and put him in a French prison where he died. I believe that Toussaint was a great leader who wasn't there for power or riches. It was really unfortunate that Toussaint ended up getting captured. I also love how Napoleon said that his biggest regret was not working with Toussaint.
3. We went over McLean's HW sentences (Write 4 sentences about our discussion at the table and/or what you are reading TSotW using two complex sentences and two sentences with adjective clauses.)
Toussaint who was a former slave helped free the slaves in St. Domingue.
Although Napoleon was a great fighter, he wasn't a great person.
Even though Napoleon said, "We are setting you free," he just took more stuff from Italy.
St. Domingue, where sugar cane and coffee beans were grown, was a tropical island.
4. We finished up by talking about the first nine chapters of No Summit Out of Sight, reading about actual hiking possibilities on Kilimanjaro and watching this video about the youngest kid to climb it (age 6!)
